Spaced Learning

The rate at which memory is lost over time, which is common across all ages, dramatically decrease within approximately 10 days of learning new content. The Ebbinghaus Retention curve below shows the rate at which memory is lost over time.

To overcome or to minimize the loss, research has found that the more frequent the attempt to rehearse, the longer the memory retention power. To support the long term memory retention, spaced learning theory is adapted through a repetition process that is applied either by training or by assessment at regular intervals.

  • Indegene has developed a unique algorithm for spaced repetition that applies to assessing a learner’s performance with smaller sets of assessment questions which can be taken in a self-paced manner over a period of time.

  • Repetition frequency of the questions is directly related to the accuracy of the answer and the confidence rating selected by learner.

  • The algorithm adapts to each learner’s performance.

  • Personalized question sets are pushed to learners at calculated intervals.

  • Therefore, each learner may follow a different learning path but all will reach the same goal of performance excellence.

Confidence-Based Assessment and Gamification

Confidence-based assessment measures the correct response while also measuring the learner’s confidence in that response. It is designed to increase retention and minimize the effects of guessing, which can skew the results of traditional single-score assessments. It distinguishes between what individuals think they know and what they actually know.

How confidence-based assessment and gamification works in ipace

ipace combines the concept of confidence-based assessment with gamification. This is achieved by:

  • Learners earning points by wagering on their answers to questions. The wager correlating to the learner’s confidence in their response and incorrect responses costing points.

  • Learners competing for status via a leaderboard and earning medals/badges based on their performance.

  • Altering the complexity of the questions over a period of time to make the assessment more challenging.

  • Testing the learner in a repetitive manner over a period of time, until they have attempted all the questions with the highest level of confidence.

ipace allows two user types – learners and administrators. Administrators, including training managers, can access a separate interface which allows them to easily - 

  • Manage questions

  • Create users and user groups

  • Assign question sets to users

  • Configure the question repetition frequency

  • Access reports of each user/group
